Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a child, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional disorder. Ford started to become attracted to acting at the age of teenager, and she joined the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time, Ford decided that it was not the right location for her. Ford applied again for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and on the fourth time she applied she was admitted. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring in Doctor Who. Ford did not finish her studies until 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such TV shows such like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Tate was also a regular performer as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate was first noticed because of her stand-up comedic performances in 1996.
